Special Events 2 Amersfoort Jazz Festival

Every year in May in the city of Amersfoort there is a festival. It lasts 3 days and on open air stages as well in theaters all kind of things are happening.

The trained listener should be selective, because the quality differs.

In 2009 on Sunday 10 in the afternoon  I was with 3 interesting groups.

You find my report below.

The afternoon started with Tineke Postma quartet. In a nice theater called Het Lieve Vrouwe theater, situated at a square with the same name in the centre of Amersfoort Tineke appeared in the following  line up:

Tineke Postma, alto, soprano

Marc van  Roon, piano

Martijn Vink, drums

Jeroen Vierdag, double bass

Anne Guus (1981) started playing piano age 5. He received classical lessons initially, and started playing jazz at age 13. At age 16 he got in the final of a national Petrov piano competition, playing his own compositions as well as transcriptions of Oscar Peterson and Michel Camilo. November 2006 he finished dentistry at the faculty of medical science in Groningen, Holland. June 2007 he finished summa cum laude at the Prins Claus Conservatory in Groningen, with the 'New York comes to Groningen' project. July 2008 he played with his trio in the final of the Dutch Jazz Competition at the North Sea Jazz festival in Rotterdam. January 2009 he won the YPF piano concours at the Bimhuis, Amsterdam. Currently Anne Guus is working parttime as a dentist and part-time as a pianist/composer.

In Amersfoort he had to play in a poor venue on a poor electric piano but still his performance was impressive:

Line up:

Anne Guus Teerhuis, piano, compositions

Glenn Gaddum, bass guitar

Kristian Krajncan, drums

Dick de Graaf quartet did meet the same poor circumstances. Fortunately Jeroen van Vliet brought his own Fender Rhodes. A high energy performance from a dazzling group.

Line up:

Dick de Graaf, tenor sax, soprano

Jeroen van Vliet, Fender Rhodes

Guus Bakker, double bass, bass guitar

Pascal Vermeer, drums
